DRAFT EVALUATION

1. in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media product?

- Conventions – blood, zombies (monster), guns/weapons, fast paced flashes and events, news report explaining what’s happened, dark atmosphere/low key lighting, harmonious and dark, fast paced music, graveyards, collapsed buildings and wasteland, survivors, graffiti, gory FX

- Blood (red food coloring), zombies (someone with a hood), toy guns and broom handles, flashes (used a lot to explain what has happened in a short amount of time), filmed at night and all shots including day converted to black and white, music developed on garageband and harmonious music is very sorrowful and juxtaposes the faster pace that follows, graveyard featured at the start of the pan to show that death has arrived swiftly as title that is over it says two weeks later, wasteland and collapsed buildings add to the apocalyptic feel, zombie films always have people who are yet to be infected, graffiti shows that all hell has broke loose and there is no order or law enforcement, used to show wounds and effects of the spore and sound used to give the effect of a deadly blow

- Yes as it is a zombie horror and we have used survivors, weapons, gore, zombies, a wasteland.

- See references

2. how does your media product represent particular social groups?

- we tried to make it reach as many people as possible by making characters from different walks of life and by using a mixture of instruments and genres to make the music.

- Everyone is equal in a time of worldwide crisis people work together instead of every little squabble still taking place.

- Target audience is 15 going off the BBFC so minimal amount of gore and swearing used and characters are designed to relatable to different teenagers.

3. what kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

- this is something that wouldn’t be produced by Hollywood as it doesn’t need the production value of a Hollywood film and would be made in England with English production values due to the low amount of SFX needed. Such English films include Colin which cost £45 to make.

- It would be a TV movie and shown on maybe SCI-FI, ZoneHorror or five.

- It would be released for the horror film boom around Halloween time but it wouldn’t offer an opportunity for any form of merchandise or franchise.

- This is through the use of low key lighting and gore.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

- See BBFC 15 rating

- See references

5. how did you attract/address your audience?

- 15+ due to content and horrors are usually this rating or higher. Horrors are popular between teens to late 20s and zombie films tend to be more popular with males.

- there aren’t any moments that would terrify the audience as our opening sequence is only meant to set the events of the film into motion.

- POV to put the audience in the shoes of the first zombie and one of the survivors. Showing the various stages of the mutation first hand through numerous shots mainly close ups allowing the viewer to experience the changes first hand.

- they are being asked to put themselves in the shoes of both the survivors and zombies and are allowed to watch everything that has happened to the world due to the spores effects.

- gives the viewer a more in-depth feel to the storyline and the emotions the characters.

- we are following the generic conventions by showing the mutation allowing us to use special effects to show gore etc. one of the suspenseful moments was when the survivors are being attacked by the zombie. Another is when the mutation occurs and the zombie attacks the girl.

- get from facebook etc.

6. what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

- Strengths:-

· Good quality camera which produced high quality video and sound

· The tripod was very sturdy, and secure

· All of the equipment was easy to use

· The green screen equipment worked very well and was also easy to use

Weaknesses:-

· There were different makes of cameras so you had to make sure you had the right camera as different ones had different settings and effects

· The camera recorded onto tape which takes longer to import and doesn’t hold as much data as a hard drive or memory card camera

- we found that due to us using small commercial cameras we were unable to get rid of the wind sound as we didn’t have access to a boom mic and cover and this picked the wind up. Also we found that it is hard to film in public places as people would walk near and in one case we had the sound of a motorbike get caught in the shot. In most cases we just reshot the shot straight after and asked anyone nearby if they would mind going a different way or moving away while we filmed.

- the only new technology we used was the green screen in the media studio however we experimented with it to begin with to see what we could potentially use and we decided how to use it from there.

- There were several effects built into imovie that where useful to make the video and these where…. These proved to be useful as they where effects that could not be made by using the camera and would be hard to try to create otherwise the … effect was good at making the image look pixilated and was a helping factor as this saves a lot of work however it also had to be run through Photoshop to make the image how we wished .garageband was a useful piece of software as instead of hiring a person to make a sound track we could decide on how we wanted it to sound with compliance and reference to the movie once finished as originally we didn’t know originally what kind of sound track we wanted but by listing to the sound loops and changing pitches we found the right one which helps create a more tense piece (put before and after on prezi)(WITH SOUND AND WITHOUT!)

7. Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

- we found that by planning and drawing up an animatic we were able to ensure that we could make sure that the opening sequence was of a higher quality than our preliminary task which was honestly terrible mainly due to inexperience of the filmmaking process and we were also able to decide on what subgenre of horror we wanted to use and what sort of monster or killer we wanted to use and at the same time formulate a viable plot.

- we were able to use wider use variety of shots thanks to us deciding to do a zombie film.

- we all feel more confident with the equipment as we have had more time to work with the equipment we were provided with and feel that it has been very useful in helping us to understand the filmmaking process and at the same time formulate ideas with what is available to us wherever and whenever we are filming.

- we feel that we have done the best that we could to fill the brief and we feel we are as close to the brief as we can be.

Assessment 7: Animatic Storyboard

Start off with the company logo that fades out to the deal from behind the bush for secrecy. We start flashing between the action and a news report starting with the user taking the drugs from a close up leading to a medium close up of him on a high from the drugs. We then see the side effects forming from various camera shots such as close up and the flash in another news report clip. We then see him in his primal state and leaving the home to attack someone. We then see his victim die and resurrect as a zombie as the news report says, “The dead will walk the earth.”
We will then flash to 2 weeks later were we see some survivors fighting zombies as we then cut to one week earlier.

Assessment 6: Organisation of actors, locations, costumes or props

The following equipment and locations are what we will need to film our sequence:
Steetly (for wasteland effect)
Guns
Drugs
Lab
Lab equipment
News studio (done through green screen)
Melee weapons
Make up
House

Assessment 3: Research of target audience and genre

When looking into target audience I decided to see how the BBFC classifies 15 and 18 films to see which would be most suitable. I found out the following:
the age rating of 15 would allow us to use no discrimination drug usage but no to encourage drug misuse. Use strong threat. Hanging can be used without details and easily gained weapons should not be glamorized. Language such as “fuck” for example the strongest term used is “Cunt” aggressive terms and language is likely to be unaceptible. Nudity is allowed but not in great detail or in a non-sexual context. Sex can be used just not in great detail. Violence can be used strongly but strong gory images are likely to be inacceptable also sexulised violence is unacceptable
The age rating 18 will allow anything to be in it however there are some exceptions where something has been breaking the law to make of film and things to enforce drug usage or sexualised assault.

Horror films started to come out in the later 1890s and early 1900s these where the first deceptions of supernatural events in film form these where silent films and they were usually short in length the most notable film of the time was Le Manoir Du Diable which is credited at the first horror. In 1910 the first version of Frankenstein was made onto film which was lost but in 1993 a film collector found it and realised it in the early 20th century brought films like Quasimodo and the hunch back of Notre dame. Many early horror films were made by German film makers. The films made then influenced many Hollywood films even if they did not know it. The first vampire film was made in 1922 and was an unauthorized adaptation of Dracula. When Hollywood stared to make movies with influences of horror The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Monster both stared Lon Chaney Sr the first American horror movie star. His more know movie was the phantom of the opera.
In the 1930s universal pictures brought out lots of horror movies such as Dracula and Frankenstein. Some added the science fiction into the horror genre such as the movie the invisible man. The films where designed to thrill and added more serious elements. Universal studios continued to make films and made wolfman although this was not the first werewolf film it was more successful. Universal created more and more films such as Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie and The Body Snatcher.

The 1950s saw advancement in technology and the form of horrors became less gothic and fell under three different sub genres horror of personality film, the horror of Armageddon film and the horror of the demonic film. A series of low budget movies featuring humanity overcoming different things such as alien invasions deadly mutation of people, plants and insects. Directors and film makers started to merge science fiction elements into the horror genre one of the most iconic movies being the incredible shrinking man. Zombies started to come about in movies such as night of the living dead this was one of the first movies to show the horror of Armageddon sub genre.
During the 1970s there was financial success of low budget films gore films the 1970s started to show sexulisim within movies referred to as A-movies. With the critical and popular success of rosemary’s baby directed by roman Polanski led to the release of more films with occult themes in the like the exorcist. Some of the more famous films made during the 70’s where the Texas chainsaw massacre and the hit Halloween this was made during the same time Friday the 13th was made and showed the a new sub-genre slasher. More famous films where made such as jaws. During the 1980’s the horror genre was becoming bigger and movie sequels where becoming bigger and bigger. There were a number of sequels such for the movies Halloween, Friday the 13th and a nightmare on Elm Street. Another amazing film of the time where American werewolf in London, return of the living dead.

During the 1990’s a the horror genre wore its self out and didn’t release as many as in the 1970-80’s but more fantasy and sci-fi movies came out so the horror movies become more funny and self mocking such as braindead movies referenced to past horror movies and showed a more funny side to the film genre.

The 2000’s saw a quiet start for the genre then final destination was released and revived the horror industry. The extremely successful saw series started and the zombie genre of horror made a comeback with a film adaptation of the game series resident evil three sequels came from it a remake of dawn of the dead was released then a zombie comedy Shaun of the dead was released. Remakes of 1970’s films were released such as the Texas chainsaw massacre and the remake of Halloween.

Good Zombie Representations

This is the trailer for Left 4 Dead 2 which is a zombie apocalypse game and you have to kill zombies to get to an evacuation point
so in this there are good models for zombies and how clothes would be if you where attacking zombie.

This is the Shaun of the Dead trailer which is a comedy aspect of a zombie apocalypse but it does have some good aspects of killing zombies even though it is a comedy.

Assessment 2: Analysis of an opening sequence (Resident evil apocalypse)

So in the opening sequence we see the opening credits we first see a CGI image of a company logo (screen gems) then we see another but from Davis films, impact Canada, Constantin film, we then see a logo which is a umbrella logo of the game series and this moves around so the audience doesn't really understand what this is but a person who would of played the games will off. Then we see some of the opening credits telling us who the director is then we are shown an extreme close-up and we see an eye with the umbrella logo imprinted on the retina we then zoom into the eye which turns into some form of computer hologram showing us a basic story of the past movies we then hear the woman on screen say that they died but didn't stay dead this is a typical theme for a zombie movie we then see someone move like she is getting out of bed and then we see someone dragging an axe with deformed feet. we then see some fast paced and quick cuts where we see different shots of zombies we go back to the story of the past movie and we see what dilemma she has got stuck in. we are then put into the position the woman's eyes via a extreme close up then we have a jump cut to see the title of the movie. once they have finished we see a big 7 on the screen and this is made to look like a news bulletin we see that the news presenter is on a green screen and we see a establishing shot when we then see some form of housing which looks idyllic with idyllic looking people and life when a boy throws a paper onto somebody lawn we then see the camera going underground then some form of titles come on screen telling us where we are and we see men in white coats and clothing and they are about to open the "hive" we then see it open and some form of details on a computer screen which shows that a zombie is making its way to a person we then are in the POV of the zombie as it goes towards the white coated person then we have a jump cut and we see a helicopter and lots of FBI looking vehicles moving towards and going through the entrance of raccoon city and goes through different parts of the city via match on action. They then go through the idyllic little village like thing and doesn't ruin the peace. We then see one of the vans go towards the camera which we then see the umbrella logo which would symbolize to the audience who they are. we then see one of the vans go to a house and some FBI looking people taking somebody into the van we then see some form of projection on the window screen they then go to another man’s house and goes to get him he asks to get his daughter and we see a jump cut and see two men getting the daughter from school

Assessment 1: Film Noir/Horror Mindmaps
